The worst and best tourist attractions in the world

A new study revealing the world’s worst (and best) value for money tourist attractions, from the Empire State Building to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, was released today.

The study analyzed the cost of a one-day adult admission ticket to 30 of the world’s top tourist attractions, as well as the number of “poor” and “terrible” reviews each attraction received.

The attractions were then given a standardized “value score” out of ten to reveal the world’s worst (and best) tourist attractions.

9 Vatican Museums Vatican City $19.27 8.2% 3.28

Taking the unfortunate title of being the cheapest attraction, the Empire State Building in New York. While it’s undoubtedly an iconic New York landmark, going up the tower costs $44.00 (and that’s only on the main deck, not the very top). When combined with a negative review rate of 4.2%, the Empire State Building only scores 1.03/10 for its value.

A close second is the American Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, an art museum featuring collections of Impressionist, Modern, and Contemporary art. The museum sees a large number of dissatisfied visitors, with nearly one in five reviews being either “poor” or “terrible”.

Buckingham Palace and Stonehenge in the UK also rank second. A visit to the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace will set you back $40.53, however, 3.3% of visitors were unimpressed with their visit to the Queen’s home.

Stonehenge, on the other hand, costs $26.35, but reviews found on Tripadvisor include that you’re not allowed to touch the stones, and one disgruntled reviewer described the attraction as “just a pile of rocks “.
